Wine and a long lunch
Ekhidna is a family-owned McLaren Vale operation that combines a working cellar door with a full restaurant and a shaded outdoor terrace looking out over the vines. Winemaker Matt Rechner has built the label around handcrafted small-batch wines and the cellar door is a relaxed, dog-friendly place to taste the whole range.
The wines
Ekhidna's range focuses on the warm-climate classics - shiraz, grenache, cabernet - as well as a growing portfolio of Mediterranean varieties and a few experimental blends. A craft beer and cider range is also made on site, so there is something for the non-wine drinker in the group.
The restaurant
Ekhidna's kitchen turns out a relaxed modern Australian menu with a strong emphasis on Fleurieu produce: share plates, wood-fired pizzas, long-lunch mains and an excellent cheese board. The terrace is one of the best places in the region for a long, slow weekend lunch.
